There’s just something magical about local theatre. Maybe it’s the fact that you know many of the actors, or that you don’t have to travel far to enjoy an evening out. Or maybe it is the overwhelmingly-superb quality that characterizes performance after performance. Whatever it is, the Kaposvar Valley Kapers acting company sure has it in spades, and can seemingly bring it out on demand!

On the evenings of May 6, 7 and 14, the Kapers held their 2016 dinner theatre production at the Boreen Hall in Esterhazy. On each evening cocktails were served from 6pm, dinner was at 7pm, and the show itself started at 8pm.

The play was “Men are Dogs” by Joe Simonelli, and the action takes place on one set during the entire play, specifically the home office of psychologist, Dr. Cecelia Monahan.

The good doctor is the co-author of a book, and she specializes in relationship issues, which she handles in a no-nonsense way. Trouble is, she has her own issues that she seems to neglect, or at the very least push aside.

Her clients in the play are all women. There’s a hairdresser who seems to go after any guy in pants, as long as his name begins with the letter B. There’s a timid nurse who has a few hidden twists to her past relationships. One client seems to have a thing for cops, and another is actually the doctor’s publicity agent.

Of course, there have to be a few fellas in the plot, and so enter Bob, a delivery man with his eye on the doctor. Then there’s Tony, a cocky divorcee who is hired to role play at the doctor’s group sessions.

Add to all of this the doctor’s mother, who is quite happy to dispense her own relationship advice, and not above listening in to private counseling sessions through a hidden hole in the wall.

Well, with all these misfits there is a lot of witty and sometimes risque dialogue, some unexpected plot twists, and lots of good belly laughs!
