Last week, with very little in the way of ceremony, Mayor Pauline Chewka, accompanied by Community Development & Recreation Director Tracy Howard and a group of enthusiastic teens, cut the ribbon to officially declare the new Esterhazy Skateboard Park open.
The project took approximately 18 months to complete, and came about because The Town noticed that a lot of the original park pieces had deteriorated to a point where they were becoming a potential safety hazard.
A Community Initiatives Fund Grant for $20,000.00 was received to go towards the revamping of the Skateboard Park, and The Town of Esterhazy contributed the remaining $29,000.00. to complete the project.
The new equipment was installed on March 22, and the grand re-opening was May 13. Since the new equipment has been installed we have had kids from all around the region checking it out. The town has also had phone calls from surrounding communities interested in installing a similar park.
Tracy Howard said, “The Skateboard Park is an important part of Esterhazy because it is a central meeting point for a lot of the teens in town. The kids use the park to skate, to hang out and feel safe.”
