Yorkton receives $330,000 for policing initiatives

The Government of Saskatchewan is taking action to ensure the safety of Yorkton communities and families through the Municipal Police Grants.  This provincial contribution of $330,000 will fund three Yorkton RCMP positions in 2015-16.

“As we strive to make Saskatchewan the best province in which to work, live and play, community safety is a priority,” Rural and Remote Health Minister and Yorkton MLA Greg Ottenbreit said on behalf of Corrections and Policing Minister Christine Tell.  “This grant provides the support needed for those hardworking police officers dedicated to protecting Yorkton communities and families.”

Municipal Police Grant funding supports youth programs designed to engage youth in positive ways within the community to reduce and prevent youth crime and victimization, such as Kids & Cops, SADD, Citizens on Patrol, Youth Sport and Swim Nights, the School Liaison Program, and the P.A.R.T.Y Program (designed to prevent alcohol and risk related trauma in youth).

“The province’s ongoing funding of the Municipal Police Grant is greatly appreciated,” Yorkton Mayor Bob Maloney said.  “This funding provides us with the capacity to acquire specialized skills that enhance our ability to ensure the safety of Yorkton families.”

The provincial government provides funding annually to urban police services across the province to support 125 municipal police positions and policing initiatives.  This grant fulfills the government’s commitment for 120 new police officers and is part of the ministry’s ongoing commitment to supporting policing services within the province’s municipalities.
