“Come Along for The Ride”

Report from Linette Lanski

Forty nine years the Twin Valley Riding Club has been active in this area.  Members have come and gone but the club continues to participate in all types of equine activities and strongly promotes horsemanship, safety and youth involvement.

In the 70’s the TVRC became involved in hosting a local jackpot rodeo.   The rodeo continues to be a jackpot paying the entries fees back to the contestants.  Many competitors entered their first rodeo event at Twin Valley with some of these competitors going on to be very successful in other rodeo associations, either as competitors, stock contractors or both.  The Twin Valley Riding Club takes great pride that this rodeo is a family affair with competitors and spectators coming from near and far, year after year bringing with them the next generation of rodeo stars.

Saturday night featured the 9th Annual TVRC Bullarama.  There was a strong showing of bull riders from all over including local entries of Derek Smart and Dennis Gilchuk.  First round proved a difficult round for the cowboys with only Derek Smart and a New Zealand rider Cam Macdonald picking up the only two qualified rides.  Judges were Keith Young and Mark Fraser, bullfighters were Jordyn Swanson, Dallas Minnie and Dustin Agecoutay, pickup men were Luke Ellingson and Wayne Rowe with announcer for the evening Kelly Brice.

Before the intermission the crowd was entertained with two very popular events:  the Wild Pony Race and Junior Steer Riding.  Junior Steer Riding is the younger version of the Bull Riding but don’t be fooled these pint size bull riders have no less heart, try or determination than the actual Bull Riders.

The second round of Bull Riding was hard again on the cowboys with everyone eating dirt from the arena floor.  The Calcutta winner that put his money on the bulls was very pleased with his choice.

Following the Bullarama, “Rodeo Active” got the crowd going for the “Family Fun Dance” in the Beer gardens. Music, dancing and a good time was enjoyed by everyone.

Bright and early Sunday the kids were able to show their stuff and enjoy barrels, poles and games during the Kids Rodeo.  Every participant received an award made possible by the generosity of our many sponsors.

Pastor Lorne Bonk of Grenfell and friends provided a beautiful and inspirational Cowboy Church service for the appreciation of many.

1:00 Rodeo action began with the Grand Entry lead by TVRC King Clayton Spencer carrying the TVRC flag followed by more youth carrying the flags of rodeo, a spectacular sight, Callie & Rebecca Helmeczi, Dustin Spencer, Jessa McNabb, Jenna McKay, Keven Kitchen and Joelle Garvey.   While Cassandra Tomolak sang a beautiful version of Oh Canada, Nicole Lanski blazed around the arena carrying the Canadian Flag.  Kelly Brice was the announcer for the day.  People out front making the show happen – Brian Kacsmar and Mark Fraser judges, Darcy Helmeczi, Ellen Thompson-Frick and Marcy Helmeczi timers, Luke Ellingson and Wayne Rowe,  pickup men, Jordyn Swanson and Dallas Minnie. cowboy lifesavers (bullfighters), Michael Tomolak clowning around, Trevor Nicholauson arena director, Donald Helmeczi rough stock chute boss, Curt Hudacek, timed event chute boss and not to forget the many others behind the scenes making the show a success.

First event of the day really got the crowd started and ready for the rest of the excitement to follow, the Wild Horse Race was in the arena.  Two teams ran hard to win the event with the team of Vince Northrop, Caleab Bedford and Jeff Scott winning the prize money and the awards sponsored by the Michael Tomolak Family and Nicole Lanski Photography.  The Wild Pony Race was the pint size version of the Wild Horse Race although these competitors showed no less heart than the big guys.  Fifteen teams fought hard over two days for prize money and awards from our sponsor High Angle Roofing with the team of Riley Mytopher, Ty Cutler and Maci McDougall giving the fastest performance in just over 8 seconds.  WOW.

Other youth events enjoyed by all were Mutton Bustin & Goat Undecorating – All contestants receive prizes made possible by: Mary Lou & Larry Pisak, Whitewood Livestock, Delphine Gehl, MC Mechanical, Somme Electric, Zaparaniuk Agencies and Whitewood Dodge.

Contestant entries were up again this year making for a long hot day of rodeo but the smiles on the faces of young and old told the story.  The Twin Valley Riding Club thanks everyone for making the Rodeo a huge success and is looking forward to next year.  See you all there.
