PJ Gillen School May Newsletter and Dates

The month of May will once again be a very busy time at P.J. Gillen.  The school year is quickly winding down and the spring weather and dry playground will be a welcome change to the children and staff.  Preparations for the Fall of 2015 are already in full swing.  If you have any comments or concerns pertaining to this newsletter or any other school happenings, please feel free to contact the school at 745-2171.

Track and Field:  The P.J. Gillen Track and Field Meet will be held on Thursday, June 4th.  Students in Kindergarten to Grade 2 will compete in a High/Low Standards meet.  Students in Grade 3 to Grade 5 will compete in a regular track meet with ribbons being awarded for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place finishers. Events will run from 9:00 a.m. until approximately 12:00 p.m.  Students will also participate in some fun events such as parachute activities and “tug of war” in between track and field events.  There will be a break during the lunch hour.  A canteen with hot dogs and hamburgers will be available.  After lunch all students will go back out to the track and run relays.

May Assembly:  We will hold our next assembly on Wednesday May 27th at 1:30 p.m.  in the school gymnasium.  Everyone is welcome to attend.

Victoria Day Holiday and Staff Inservice: There will be NO SCHOOL ON MONDAY MAY 18th due to the Victoria Day Long Weekend.
There will also be NO SCHOOL ON TUESDAY MAY 19 2015 due to a Staff Inservice Day in Yorkton.  Students will return to class on Wednesday May 20th, Day 2.

Mother’s Day Carnations: Mother’s Day Carnations will be delivered Friday May 8, 2015. If your son or daughter ordered carnations they will be delivered directly to their classroom by our SCC. Thank you for all of your support!

Bicycle Safety Week:  Bicycle Safety week will be held May 11th to May 17th in Saskatchewan.  This week long event encourages communities to raise awareness of bicycle safety rules and components.  Students are encouraged to follow all safety rules for cycling to and from school.  Our local RCMP will be holding a Bike Safety Rodeo on Thursday June 2nd to help raise awareness with students for safety while bicycling.

Canteen News:  The canteen continues to sell Pizza on Wednesdays with 3 choices, Ham and Pineapple, Pepperoni, and Cheese at 2.50 a slice.

Sasktel Phone Interruption:  On Wednesday May 13th Sasktel will be doing an upgrade to the schools phone system.  We will have intermittent phone service throughout the day due to this upgrade.  We apologize for this inconvenience and thank you for your patience during this time.  The phone system will resume to full service on May 14th.

Gillen School Library News:  May will be a fun month in the library!  Students are making their own graphic novels to put on the shelves.  There will be focus on science in the library this month.  We’ll be doing some experiments and figuring out how the library resources can help us do scientific research!
Our author this month is Eric Carle.  He has many interesting books with beautiful illustrations.  To honor him, we will have a contest where students can design bookmarks that replicate his art.  We will choose 3 bookmarks to win a prize! Two months left to read your hearts out. . . . so get reading!!

Hot Lunches:  Hot lunches for the month of May are as follows:

  • May 4th—Chicken Wrap
  • May 11th—Pizza Soup
  • May 25th—Taco in a Bag

All hot lunches will be sold for $3.00 a meal.  There will be no Hot Lunches for the Month of June.  Thank you for supporting PJ Gillen Hot Lunch Program and a very special Thank You to Dianne Kirby for generously donating all the vegetables for the month of May for our Hot Lunches.

Angels of Hope “Cause for Paws”: Gather your friends and family and join Angels of Hope Animal Rescue for their 3rd Annual “Cause for Paws” walk-a-thon on Sunday June7th.  It all starts at 10:30 a.m. at the Scouts Hall in Esterhazy (between skating rink and pool.)  In the event of inclement weather, we will be walking indoors at a predetermined location.  The walk should take approximately one hour.  Participants may bring their dogs to join in the walk but must be on a leash at all times.  Following the walk, all participants are invited to enjoy a FREE BBQ lunch at the Scouts Hall.  If you are unable to walk or attend this fundraising event, you are still welcome to submit pledges to this GREAT cause!  All pledge-getters turning in $100.00 or more receive a specially designed CAUSE FOR PAWS t-shirt.  As well, the individual pledge-getter who raises the most $ in pledges will receive a Samsung Tablet & case valued at over $400.00.  For more information about this event, please contact Terry at (306) 745-7144 or Sherryl at (306) 745-2370.  Hope to see you there!

2015 -2016 School Supply Fee:  PJ Gillen School supply fee of $30.00 may be paid to your classroom teachers.  The due date for supply fees is May 29, 2015.  Grade 5 students do not pay any fees at Gillen school but will pay their fees at Esterhazy High School in the fall.
