PJ Gillen School – April Newsletter

The month of April will be highlighted by the Easter Break. If you have any comments, questions, or concerns pertaining to this newsletter or any other school happenings please contact the school office at 745-2171. Thank you!

Scholastic Book Orders: Thank you to everyone who supported our March book orders. April book orders are due Wednesday, April 15.

Mother’s Day Carnations: Thank you for your orders for the Mother’s Day Carnations. The delivery date to the school will be Friday May 8th. If your son/daughter ordered carnations they will be delivered to their homerooms by the SCC.

Easter Break: The Easter Break will be from Friday, April 3, 2015 inclusive to Sunday, April 12, 2015. School commencing Monday April 13, 2015 Day 1.

Assembly: Our school assembly for April will be on Wednesday April 29, at 1:15 p.m. in the school gymnasium. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Canteen News: Milk draws for Contest #2 have arrived! The Contest will run from April 13 to April 24th inclusive. Students can enjoy the delicious benefits of milk while winning some great prizes provided by Saskmilk. DRINK MILK AND ENJOY!

Library News: We had another great Book Fair! Thank you to everyone who came to visit us. This month we have a storyteller coming to speak to the grade four and five students. It should be lots of fun! Our featured author in April is Mo Willems. Our students can’t get enough of him and his pigeon! In honour of our featured author, we will have a couple of contests this month. Students will be looking for pigeons in our library. They will also be designing bookmarks for our bookmark contest! Have a great break and keep reading!

Hot Lunches: Hot lunches for the month of April are as follows:

April 20 – Hearty Hamburger Soup and a bun

April 27 – Chilli and a bun

Anyone wishing to help with hot lunches is very much welcomed. A huge THANK YOU to Tammy MacDonald, Kendra Paidel, Brenda Rice, Lisia Oliveira Zinn, Brenda Lomenda and Nicole Knezacek for their continued support for our hot lunch program.

GSSD Indoor Track Meet: All Grade 4 and 5 students attended an indoor track and field meet in Yorkton on Wednesday, March 11. The students all put in an excellent effort and had a really enjoyable day. From this meet, the top six students in each event were invited back for the Showcase track meet on Friday, March 13. Twenty nine PJ Gillen students were invited back to compete in a very competitive field of about 400 athletes. Athletes bringing home medals from this event were:

Claire Norek-gold medal in shot put, Tyler Bomboir-gold medal in long jump, Ethan Lomenda-bronze in shot put, Marie Dunster-bronze in high jump, Quin Gogol-bronze in 600 metre race. Grade 4 girls relay team-Cassidy Hudacek, Kieara Jordan, Emma Jones, and Ava Burman received a bronze medal. Grade 5 girls relay team-Skye Miller, Haily Neyedly, Quin Gogol, and Micah Ketel received a bronze medal. Great job grade 4 and 5 students!

Telemiracle 39 Update: Congratulations to PJ Gillen SRC, students and staff for a job well done. The final total donated to Telemiracle is $1000.00. Great job done for a wonderful cause.

2015 Red Cross Day of Pink: This day is to bring awareness to bullying issues in Saskatchewan and encourage others to join the movement. We encourage all staff, students, parents and the community to wear pink on Wednesday April 1st, and to join the movement.

Grade 4 Floor Hockey Tournament: Congratulations to the grade 4 girls placing bronze medals at the Saltcoats Floor HockeyTournament. The team consisted of Darien, Bailey, Claire, Torrie, Ava, Emma, Mallory, Sydney, Kiana, Kieara, Cassidy and Madison. The girls team was coached by Mrs. Lippai.

Congratulations to the grade 4 boys placing Gold medals at the Saltcoats Floor Hockey Tournament. The team consisted of Connor, Ahmed, Ben, Dylan, Daunte, Tom, Aidan, Tyrell, Ryder, Walker, Rylund, Ashtyn, Kaycee, and Ethan. The boys team was coached by Ms. Hegedus.

Grade 5 Floor Hockey Tournament: Congratulations to the grade 5 girls placing silver medals at the Churchbridge Floor Hockey Tournament. The team consisted of Hailey, Skye, Micah, Sierra, Marie, Karen, Leah, Avery, Quinlan, Ameeka, Abeeha, and Emma. The girls team was coached by Mrs. Mund.

Congratulations to the grade 5 boys placing Silver Medals at the Churchbridge Floor Hockey Tournament. The team consisted of Ethan, Beau, Paden, Aidan, William, Kayden, Ferzan, Carson, Qasim, Jay, Aiden, Hudsyn, Michael, Braxten, and Zachary. The boys team was coached by Mrs. Gale.

Angels of Hope Animal Rescue: Spring is just around the corner and AOHAR is getting excited about their upcoming Spring Garage Sale and Bake Sale scheduled for May 2nd from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. We will be accepting donations of clean, gently used items as well as home-made baking and preserves. Donations can be dropped off at the Elks Hall in Esterhazy the evening of Thursday April 30th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. as well as on Friday May 1st from 10:00 to 8:00 p.m. Please support this fundraising event as every dollar raised helps to provide the medical needs of the animals in our care.
